2nd Sunday of Epiphany - Year C

Readings are:

  • Isaiah 62:1-5
  • Psalm 36:5-10
  • 1 Corinthians 12:1-11
  • John 2:1-11

The readings of the Epiphany season reveal the truth about Jesus. The miracle at Cana is billed by John as "the first of his miraculous signs" pointing to the power of Jesus not only to turn water into wine, but to make all things NEW. It' no coincidence that there are six stone jars. Six is one short of the number used to describe the fullness of God's creation (compare the 7 days of the week).

The water turned wine is a gift for the Cana community, and GIFT is very much te theme of 1 Corinthians12. Paul refers to the different gifts that people have. (perhaps because some people were thinkin hemselve moreimportant tha others.) Paul reminds the Corinthians - and us - that the gifts we have are SPIRITUAL GIFTS. All the gifts are "the work of one and he am Spirit."

There are many tests available to help us realise that we are all different persnality types (like Myers-Briggs) and that we are inclined to make different contributions when we are working in teams (like Belbin). They underline the importance of APPRECIATING OUR DIFFERENCES. We COMPLEMENT one another.

Almigty God, in Christ you make all things new.

Transform the poverty of our nature

by the riches of your grace,

and in the renewal of our lives

make known your heavenly glory.
