The opening of your word gives light; it give understanding to the simple.

Luke 4:16-24 describes Jesus's reading of the scripture in the Nazareth synagogue. haded te scripture he chooses to read from Isaiah 61. What he reads isn't exactly what is recorded in Luke' gospel and William Loader explores the reasons for this here.

Isaiah 61:1-2 reads:

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners, a

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
       to comfort all who mourn,

Luke's passage doesn't have the words "the day of vengeance". So did Jesus stop short at this point?

The reference - "to release the oppressed" isn't from Isaiah 62 at ll, but from Isaiah 58:6. Was Jesus ad-libbing, or hs Lke slipped it in? If so, why?

Godly Play offers children an opportunity to explore stories of the Bible in a way which is proving very popular. Godly Play is every Sunday at 10.45 in the Parish Rooms.

Some quotes about the Bible:

The existence of the Bible, as a book for the people, is the greatest benefit which the human race has ever experienced. Every attempt to belittle it is a crime against humanity.

Immanuel Kant

The Bible has been the Magna Charta of the poor and oppressed. The human race is not in a position to dispense with it.

Thomas Huxley
